Diffusion

'Diffusion' is an immersive interactive 3D digital artwork using face recognition to control pixelation, camera pan and zoom.

This work was produced as an ancillary to recent project 'Data Double', using similar face recognition algorithms to control virtual camera behaviour. Additionally, face movement is monitored to control the z position of each pixel comprising the rendering of the viewer(s) face(s), creating an effect reminiscent of the imagery produced by a time of flight depth camera, such as a Kinect. However, there is no actual depth data associated with the imagery as it is all captured by a conventional camera (in this case, a Canon EOS R50, connected to the Processing application using Canon Webcam Utility software).

The imagery is also reminsicent of that created by pioneering video and digital artist Woody Vasulka - a visionary and lovely man who sadly left this mortal coil in 2019.
